Good health goes hand-in-hand with sporting activities. It is for this reason that two event organisers from Philippi will be staging a fun run on World Aids Day on Tuesday.

Bongi Mgupani and Welile Freddy from Mgupane Consulting are the young people behind the Samora Machel Aids Day Fun Run on Saturday 5 December.

According to the duo, the race is aimed at reminding residents that sporting participation is also important when it comes to good health.

“Every year around Aids Day various events are conducted and those who lost their lives to the disease remembered. Rightfully so. However, we believe that we should not forget that physical exercise also contributes to good health and it is advisable for people living with the disease,” said Mgupane.

On the day, there will be various health education activities by the government and Mgupane said that the races will serve to remind attendants of the importance of sports.

“Entry is free at the stadium, however to compete in the race you must go to the local Spar and get the application form and bring your ID document along.

Entering the race costs R40. The race commences inside the stadium and will circle the neighbourhood before ending at the stadium again.

First past the post prizes in both male and female categories include a DSTV HD decoder and dish.

This also includes a free installation and activation; other prizes include sporting hampers and clothing items.

“The race is open to all ages and its going to be an entertaining day with music and highly informative sessions from the health department,” said Freddy.

He said that they hoped that the fun run will cultivate an interest for athletics in the community.

“In this area, the favoured sporting code is soccer and there isn’t as much interest in other sports.

As you know not all of us can be good in soccer and maybe this will be a good alternative for those that want to participate in other sports,” said Freddy.

Application forms for the races are available at Samora Machel Spar. For more information you can call 0847126980 or 0622325525.
