Fourteen teams are preparing to play in the quarter finals of the Mandalay Local Football Association (LFA) on Saturday and Sunday.

The annual event, which started in 2011, is organised as part of commemorating Youth Day, June 16.

Some of the teams are Mandalay United, Supper Eagle from Lower Crossroads and Cosovo Green from Cosovo.

Each soccer team has three teams which play in U/12, U/14 and U/16 divisions respectivelly.

Ringo Mbetheni, president of the Mandalay Football Association, said the tournament started small, but now it has reached greater heights.

“We are trying to fight crime with the tournament, because we take the youth away from the streets. It is growing. We have learnt from mistakes that we did before and we now understand what we are doing,” Mbetheni said.

Mbetheni said they wish to get sponsors as they struggle to run the tournament.

They currently operate on the small contribution from the teams.

Mandalay United Under 16 team was crowned the champions of the tournament, last year.

The finals are due to be played next Saturday.

The first prize will get undisclosed cash and second and third prize will be trophy and medals.
