Gauteng taxpayers throw in their lot

Gauteng had the largest number of taxpayers for the 2015 tax year in South Africa, according to the latest tax statistics report.

The report, which is published jointly by National Treasury and the South African Revenue Services (Sars), was released on Tuesday. It takes the tax register as at March 2016. There was a total of 18.2 million registered taxpayers which was up 8.4% compared to the previous year. Of these, only 4.8m of taxpayers were assessed.

The aggregated taxable income was R1.3trn. However, the tax liability of assessed individuals came to R268.5bn.

Fin24 previously reported that personal income tax (PIT) was the largest source of tax revenue, contributing 36.4% of total tax revenue collections in 2015. A total of R136.1bn of income tax payments of the province was assessed.
