A frail pensioner who still lives in a shack in Makhaza in Khayelitsha claims that she was shocked to the core to receive information that her RDP house was already built in more than seven years ago.

Gogo Vuyiswa Jada, 80, said she became aware that her RDP house was built in 2010.

“I applied for the house in 1997 and I became aware that my house was built only in 2010.

The department of Human Settlements promised to intervene, but I am still waiting. I feel bad, because my shack leaks. It is very cold here and I am sick. It is a painful situation for me.”

She said her only wish is to move-into her decent house.

“My son had to quit work to look after me, because I need help even if I want to go to toilet,” Jada said.

Mbulelo Lamani, Jada’s son, said he has been visiting the department in the hope to resolve the issue.

Vuyo Khonkwane, of Sanco in the area, said he also became aware of Jada’s situation in 2014 and that he has since taken the matter to the Office of the Public Protector.

“She was so stressed when I saw her in 2014, that I decided to help.

I became aware that there are more elders who have such problems here. Other elders have since died without occupying their houses,” Khonkwane said.

Muneera Allie, Directorate Communication and Stakeholder Relations for the Provincial Department of Human Settlements said the matter was getting attention.

“The Department is aware of the matter. We confirm that the house was not illegally given to someone else. Due to project complications, the department sought to accommodate beneficiaries in different projects. The alternate project that Ms Jada selected is unfortunately full. The City of Cape Town is currently facilitating the completion of a different subsidy application.

Ms Jada will therefore be allocated in another PHP project,” she said.
