Police have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of one security guard and the injury of another following a cash-in transit robbery in Philippi on Monday.

According to the police, seven armed men conducted the brazen raid after midday outside the One Up Supermarket next to Siyahlala informal settlement.

“At around 14:00 two security guards were shot at by unknown suspects while collecting cash from One-Up Supermarket in Monwood Drive in Browns Farm.

The two men in their twenties were shot from behind while carrying money bags on their way out of the shopping Centre,” said Captain Sitshitshi.

One of the guards was fatally wounded and the second one was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

“It is believed the suspects hijacked a vehicle as a getaway and fled the scene with the money bags.

When they reached Steve Tshwete Street in Browns Farm they emptied the money bags and assaulted a person sitting next to the vehicle,” she explained.

She added that the perpetrators then dumped the vehicle and hijacked another one and left the empty money bags next to the vehicle.

“It is believed the seven suspects drove towards Lower Crossroads in Philippi East.

A case of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and a host of hijackings will be investigated,” Sitshitshi offered.

She has urged anyone who may have information that can assist with the investigation to contact SAPS on 0860010111
