Gugulethu’s own queens and princesses were crowned in a lavish ceremony at the Ikhwezi Community Hall on Saturday.

The event – in its second year – was organised by Zanokhanyo Youth Development.

The aim of the pageant is to promote the culture of self-love and confidence among young kasi women.

One of the organisers and chairman of the youth development, Bongani Matenjwa,22, said: “The purpose of the event is to integrate the culture of self-worth in young girls.

“It helps them fight things like inferiority complex.”

The show had two categories, the Miss Teen Gugulethu for girls between the ages of 15 and 17 and the Miss Gugulethu for participants over the age of 18.

Mathuto Oshai, 17, was crowned Miss Teen and Bongiwe Qhwalane,20, won the title in the senior event category.

Both queens received bath sets. Runners-up won cellphones and the second princesses went home with special soaps.

An excited Qhwalane said: “I’m very happy I took the crown and I feel honoured.”

She said TV host and DJ Bonang Matheba is her role model.

The event was attended by residents and parents of the participants.

Bongani appealed to sponsors to get on board.

“This could be the beginning of someone’s modelling career. We need support to make this project grow,” he said.

Radio Zibonele presenter Ntobsie Mcetywa was the MC for the event.
