LETTER: Gugs library under-utilised

2016-02-18 06:00

As a student one of my tasks for research is to check on the current status of my community library. Last Thursday I had arranged a meeting with the Gugulethu Public Library with a view to request library services, most probably a container at the St Francis Adult Centre in NY18, nearer to Gugulethu Square, in line with the City of Cape Town’s policy ‘to bring services closer to where people are’.

My proposal was turned down. Here is the picture: The Gugulethu community has over 100 000 inhabitants, and so one can imagine now with the development of the Gugulethu Square we should be way over that number in 2016. According to them, library patrons using the facility on a busy month reach 8000, and if the library in a week issues 100 library materials that is a bonus.

From this picture this facility is a white elephant, how can something that can contribute to our personal development be so useless? Please send in your comment savethegugslib@gmail.com to save this library, especially calling on high school learners and those who are unemployed as the facility offers free internet daily for 45 minutes, printing at 60c per page. They are planning free Wi-Fi too. Ndithetha nawe mntu waseGugulethu Section 1,2,3 and 4, Phola Park, KwaKhikhi, Khayalethu Park, Khanya Park, Luyoloville, New Rest, Barcelona, KTC nase New Crossroads.

How much food do you need to concentrate?

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
