Koyo Bala, a member of gay music group 3Sum, has passed on.

Cape Town born Bala,37, died on Monday morning after a long battle with cancer, sending shock waves through the entertainment industry.

Friend and fellow band member, Amstel Maboa, said he was fine when he left Joburg for Cape Town on Sunday.

“Koyo was a true soldier.

“He was my pillar of strength and I’m grateful I could spend time with him during the past few weeks,” said Amstel, who is now the only surviving member of 3Sum.

Jeff Moyo was the first member of the group to pass on, in 2010.

Koyo was last seen in public at the Metro FM Music Awards in Durban, KZN.

According to sources, he was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Joburg last week.

After he was discharged, he travelled to his home in Gugulethu on Sunday.

He had been living there for the past two years while undergoing chemotherapy.

Last year he revealed to the public that he had beaten TB and cancer, but he had been diagnosed with cancer again.

This time it was colorectal cancer, which affects the lower part of the bowels and the rectum. Koyo’s friend and mentor, fashion designer Ephraim Molingoana said he took him to the airport on Sunday.

“I will always remember his bravery and how much he loved life.

“He was an amazing spirit.

“I have lost a great friend. He told me that he loved me when I dropped him off at the airport,” he said.

The singer, who was preparing to release a new album and his autobiography, revealed in 2011 that he was HIV-positive.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalised.
