A local NGO that helps teenagers with academic and life skills development is reaching out to the community and local business for help with is winter camp.

Complete Life Centre is an organisation that hosts after-school programmes for children from four different schools in Philippi, Nyanga, and Crossroads.

They are planning their annual winter camp where 120 teenagers will be camping it out in Muizenberg for three days from July 12.

According to founder Anele Heli, the organisation is struggling with funding and needs support to carry out its services during the school recess.

Heli,29, is a youth activist from New Crossroads. He developed a love for youth programs as head of the youth activities of Favours Cathedral Church in Elsies River.

“This is going to be our second annual camp where we engage youngsters in educational, sport and life skills activities. We are currently facing the challenge of funding to pay for transport, sporting apparel and other equipment,” he said.

The organisation has received some support from Estratweni Mobile Foods with catering for the camp.

“... But we still have financial challenges that we need help with. The idea is to create a fun environment for the young people, to take them out of their surroundings so they can experience something new.

While all this fun is being had, they are learning critical life skills,” said Heli.

He said he founded the organisation last year with the aim to steer the youth away for social drugs and social delinquency.

They regularly hold after-school programmes at Dr Nelson Mandela High School, Siyazakha Primary School, Masivuke Primary School and St Mary’s Primary in Nyanga.

He said that despite challenges such as lack of funds for travelling for the young children the results have become evident.

“Parents are now warming up to our programmes because the results are showing in the academic progress of learners and also at a personal level, because we promote maturity. We encourage them to be independent and make money for themselves while they are learning so they depend less on parents.

We are a family unit so that those who don’t have strong family structures that they belong,” he said. Contact:0733504171.
