One metro police officer was wounded when he exchanged fire with gunmen who tried to rob his partner of his firearm in Khayelitsha.

The incident took place on Thursday 14 September near the ever busy intersection in Solomon Tshuku Road in Site C.

According to Metro police spokesperson Zelda Martin, the two officers were approached by three men while they were patrolling the MyCiti bus route in the area.

“Two of the City’s Law Enforcement Transport Unit members were on duty and patrolling along the My Citi Khayelitsha route when three male suspects attempted to rob one of the officers of his firearm,” she said.

The officer who was outside of their official vehicle was surrounded by the suspects and he then lifted his arms to show that he was not armed.

“His partner who was armed, observed the incident and immediately exited the vehicle to go to the aid of his colleague. One of the suspects who was armed saw this and opened fire on the officer getting out of the vehicle, hitting him in the thigh.

The wounded officer returned fire and struck his assailant in the stomach and leg. The wounded suspect’s accomplices fled the scene.

It was reported that nearby taxi drivers witnessing the incident also came to the aid of the officers by opening fire on the armed suspect,”she said adding that the last part was not confirmed.

Witnesses on the scene made the same claims and added that a meat vendor was also hit in the face with a stray bullet.

“During the crossfire a bystander was struck by a stray bullet and sustained a wound to his nose. The wounded suspect was arrested and he, the officer and the injured bystander was taken to hospital. The suspect is recovering under armed guard. The officer and bystander are also recovering in hospital,” he added.
