MANY children are bullied at school and women are abused by their husbands.

That is why self-defence is very important to sensei Monde Sisusa (60).

He teaches kids and adults karate at Thusong Recreation Centre in Khayelitsha.

He said karate is not only about fighting, but mainly discipline.

“I have produced several black belt karatekas, and many of my students have excelled in life because they remained disciplined. Some have become lawyers,” he said.

Monde started training kids in his community 12 years ago.

“My mission is to cut down crime by taking kids off the streets after school so that they are occupied with something good.

“I like to start training them from the age of four so they can realise their potential,” said Monde.

One of his students will be participating in a karate tournament in Canada this week.

“He was selected during the national championships in Bloemfontein to represent South Africa,” he said.

Another student, Sphokazi Mnyameni (34), said she joined the karate class last year.

“I don’t want to fight with anyone.

“I’m learning to protect myself. I’m doing karate for self-defence.”

Another reason she joined is because her son is also in the class.

Thozimla Twani (14) told the VisionTeam that he doesn’t fight with other kids at school. “We are told not to beat others but only to defend ourselves.”
