Knowing that the devil makes use of idle hands, Pastor Mongezi Valashiya of the Dock Mission Church of Khayelitsha had designed a week long programme to keep little childre busy during the festive period.

Pastor Valashiya, working in cahoots with community organisations and the police, then staged a highly successful “safety and drug awareness week” in Kuyasa and Endlovini.

“We know from experience that children often get into trouble when schools close, parents are still busy at work and during these times it is easy to fall prey into many distractions,” said Valashiya.

More than 200 children enjoyed talks from social workers, the police and various comunity leaders who shared the platforn during the week.

Harare SAPS Sergeant Koegelenberg told the children not be afraid of the police.

“Make us your friends because we are here to protect you. When you see something wrong tell us so that we can lock those who do bad things in the community,” said Sergeant Koegelenberg.

Constable Pondo from Lingelethu West SAPS also spoke at length about the dangers of drug abuse.

“You have to learn from this age that hating drugs are dangerous for your health and will lead you to jail,” she said.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism (Sanca) message was clear to all: drugs and alcohol destroy lives and families.
