Township’s best crickecting exports will be showcasing their talents at the Langa Stadium on Sunday December 27.

Nabeal Dien, general manager of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) said: “This festival is set to accelerate the production of black players at franchise and national level and revive the game in the township that produced the likes of Thami Tsolekile and South Africa’s latest test debutant, Temba Bavuma.

In its debut in 2014, the inaugural Langa Cricket Festival was attended by Tsolekile, Siya Simetu, Nono Pongolo and Malusi Siboto, who were all born and bred in the township.

Beresford Williams, president of WPCA said: “The Langa festival is sponsored by Cricket South Africa (CSA), the WPCA and is supported by Kookaburra and Sportsman’s Warehouse, first lured about 1500 people. We had cricket clinics, while Simetu, Siboto, Tsolekile and Bavuma hosted four participating teams.

“The festival is an annual event on the CSA- and WPCA-calendar,” .

“The purpose of the festival was to revive cricket in one of the most important hotbeds of cricket development in the Western Cape. Langa is one of eight transformation hubs in the area.

Langa Cricket Club spokeman Phumzile Malotana said they were looking foward to seeing their “old players mngling with new kiddies”.

“It’s going to be exciting because kids will learn from current pros and veterans like Phumzile Msweli and others,” he said.

“Last year 120 kids participated in the clinics, cricketing authorities and players also mingled with the community of Langa. We are encouraged by the level of public awareness,” he said.

Malotana said cricket veteran Gary Kirsten will be speaking to participants on Sunday.

“We invited everyone to come and enjoy cricket. It’s going to be a great day I promise,” said Malotana.
