Lets empower all our children

2017-06-15 06:01

The Take a Girl Child to Work initiative is a wonderful idea.

The majority of women in the country are still victims of gender inequality because they lack the skills they need to become independent.

Women remain under-represented in the economy and only a handful occupy senior positions in the corporate world.

The aim of the initiative is to inspire young women to realise their full potential.

This can only happen through exposure to a number of career opportunities and positive role

models.

That said, I believe we still have to balance the equation by paying some attention to young men.

Young men need to be empowered so they can make the right choices.

It’s important to prepare them for the future instead of assuming they were born strong.

Boys are forced to be strong at all times.

Even when they are going through a difficult time, they are not allowed to shed any tears.

Young men should not be ignored.

They must be asked to reflect on their relationship with women, and informed about what type of behaviour is unacceptable.

Young men should also be made to feel important.
