It’s a combination of audacity and a gutsy push towards entrepreneurship that has led a B.Com graduate and media strategist from Gugulethu to start a beverages manufacturing company.

Shaun Sishuba is the founder of Pholas Beverages knows that this industry needs resilience, and without that quality, his venture will flounder.

According to him, his company, first based in Stellenbosch, manufactures juice products(13 flavours), bottled water and kraft beer.

“I am very excited to have gone this route in business,” Shaun told City Vision.

After graduating from the UWC in 2007, and after a brief stint at a cellular network company, he said he dabbled in the media industry, with him and his brother starting the Platinum Media Group, winning a lucrative government contract for a careers based guidance inserts in newspapers.

However, he soon developed the idea of a beverages company after making observations in the sector.

“I was always interested in running my own business one day. My father owned taxis, which gave me the space to observe how a business is managed and what can make it fail, all efforts notwithstanding,” he said.

He noticed that there were few, if any, Black manufacturers in the beverages industry.

“I saw that we don’t have Black owned businesses that focus on manufacturing beverages as such and the idea grew in my mind,” he said.

According to Sishuba, operations have also started at the back of a shop in Gugulethu, in which he takes an active role.

He said his products are available in the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Mafikeng, but would like to have a national reach in the near future.

“I decided to create products that will compete on the shelf and which will have the highest premium quality and be available nationwide,” he said.

He said the venture employs about 36 people, including sales representative.

“We have 35 employees that focuses on sales, marketing and production. We produce 100% fruit juices, purified Ozonised still water and craft beer. We produce over 13 different flavours of fruit juice,” he said.
