Matric Class of 2015; swim to greater oceans

2016-01-14 06:00

Congratulations are in order to the class of 2015. By passing your matric exams, you have made your schools, families and friends proud.

This is your first qualification and it must mean a lot after all the hard work, especially for rural pupils, who often have to travel more than 15km to school.

Passing matric is the beginning of your educational career. To all the pupils who were unlucky– I remember failing matric as if it was yesterday. I felt like a loser and a disappointment to my family.

However, an old man once said to me: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

I went back to grade 12 and did matric for the second time. I had a dream and failing matric didn’t mean the end of my dream. Today I cannot believe that I am doing my Master’s Degree.

It’s going to be painful seeing your friends and classmates going to university, but in life we each have our own journey.

The best thing to do if you have failed matric is to not try and take short cuts, including changing your dreams or career choices.

Seek advice from your teachers, university graduates or guidance advisers to see if you can write a supplementary exam or re-write your matric.

It is never too late for you to achieve your goals.

To all those who have passed their matric and are busy looking for spaces at different institutions of higher learning, beware of fake colleges.

Check with the department of higher education to see if a college is registered with them.

There are even fraudsters who will offer you a space at university, asking you to deposit money in their bank accounts.

It is true that money is the answer to most of the problems we have, but it can open some doors and close others.

All the best to those who have been accepted at different universities and colleges.

Make sure you don’t waste your parents’ money and your time.
