A Mfuleni man wept bitterly as a magistrate sentenced him to five years for rape.

Sonwabo Khabiqheya (44) was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Monday at Blue Downs Magistrate Court.

On March last year, Khabiqheya, let himself into the house of a woman in Mfulen and raped her.

Mfuleni police spokeswoman Captain Nothemba Rhamuva said they were excited by the sentence. She urged the community to work with the police in reporting crimes of this nature.

. Report sexual offences and assist and encourage others to do the same.

. Stop clinging to myths and stereo types that perpetuate rape and violence, and blames the victim.

. Rape is a crime and only the offender is to blame.

. Accept that there is no one that is above the law.

. Speak out against sexual offences.

. Join community-based initiatives to educate on gender equality issues and to render victim support.
