Women were the focus for many activists during this year’s Human Rights month.

The fight of women for their human rights is one of the biggest and longest struggles faced across the world.

“Our philosophy on Human Rights Month was that every woman has the right to financial freedom and the opportunity to a career and our ‘Mimi Agents for Change’ campaign, will afford women that opportunity,” said Ramona Kasavan, CEO and Founder of Mimi Women, South Africa’s first and only Black female-owned sanitary pad company.

Giant strides have been made in the fight for women and their rights to engage in a free and fair society.

Unfortunately, even in current society many women across the world still face prejudice and oppression. Kasavan says that although South Africa is a far cry from war torn countries where women have no rights at all, many of the countries’ mothers, sisters, and daughters face ridicule and judgement on a daily basis all because they experience something as natural as a period.

“We believe in the upliftment and empowerment of our fellow women and that is why Mimi Women is in the process of raising R10 million capital from women entrepreneurs, and simultaneously we are reaching out to impoverished women to give them an opportunity to create an independent living for themselves,” she said

She said Agents for Change MimiBizBox can make financial freedom a reality for women.

The ‘MimiBizBox’ gives women an affordable start in running their own business, and growing it into a network of other women, by selling low-cost sanitary pads within their community. They can turn an investment of just R799, into a profit within three months.

The MimiBizBox consists of 60 packs (10 sanitary pads per pack), each pack costing R10 and selling for R15, thereby delivering a profit of R300 per box sold. In addition, each agent will receive marketing items to get them established.

“Our model aims to make empowerment a reality for many women within a short period of time, by working from the roots up,”she said.

She said thes model will work under any circumstances, but by raising equity capital they are looking to accelerate the process, enabling many more women to break the cycle of poverty and to take charge of their futures.
