A local artist and entrepreneur is hoping that his fashion statement can change the image of Nyanga from a so-called murder capital to a township to be proud of.

Sibabalwe Nongqunga aka Siba Anne is a hip-hop artist who has started his fashion range called Made In Nyanga East.

The 23-year-old launched the range a month ago under his Urbanic Wear label which he started in 2011.

He says that his aim is not just to sell these caps but he wants to give young people of Nyanga East something to be proud of.

“We all know the perception and the reality of Nyanga East and we don’t deny that but this is not all that we can offer. When you mention that you come from you are regarded as a criminal and we need to change that because there is so much more we can offer.

In my experience when you go to places like Joburg and they ask you where you are from and you say Cape Town. They will ask you about Gugulethu and Khayelitsha,” he said.

He said that his clothing is targeted at the youth and he is hoping that they will be more confident about where they come from.

Nongqunga is not only a popular artist among the youth is a graduate of the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development and has placed himself as social entrepreneur hoping to make a change in his community.

He is a founding member of the Open MIc sessions which take place at the Zolani Centre where the youth gathers in large numbers to enjoy local hip-hop.

He says that his branching out to fashion is in line with his objectives of promoting youth culture.

“A lot of young people follow me and my music as well follows in my steps. What better way to make them proud of their townships. The first batch of caps I brought has sold out and we currently taking orders for the second batch, so I can say that the reception has been good,” he said.

He said that he is planning to expand to represent other townships as they have been enquiries already.

“We will be also have caps for other areas as more people have been asking for them. I am also hoping to represent Nyanga next month as I will be performing in Johannesburg,” he said.

Nongqunga can be reached on his Facebook accountor on 0781619321.
