If you do not know yourself, do this…

Don’t you feel proud to be South African? Don’t you feel proud to have people like Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, who else? Don’t you want to be like them?

Who determines who you are? You do. You know yourself. You know how you feel inside. I’m not this. I’m not that. I can’t be like so-and-so. I’m too weak. I know myself.

As soon as I rise, someone will pounce on me. They will remind me of the mistakes I have. Or, I did. Which are too ghastly to contemplate. Better to keep quiet. And stay in my hole.

There, no one is going to put me down. I am what others are expecting me to be. That is why I don’t shine. This is you thinking. This is you telling yourself. Yes, you do talk to yourself.

And you do that all the time. There is no day that passes by without you saying something to you. Reminding you of who you are? And where you belong. Who are you? And where do you belong?

Have you ever asked yourself those questions? Of course you have, in your dialogue within your head. Maybe not in the way I am asking them. But you have talked to yourself about that.

We always do; the me question. We wonder about ourselves. We say, “Why me?” Who wouldn’t ask that when things are tough? When the future is bleak? When you don’t have someone to love.

You wonder, “Am I going to be alone until I die?” You worry about yourself a lot. You don’t have time for other things like, social justice. Helping the poor. Thinking about others.

I think there is something like; the more you thinking about yourself, the more you are going to lose yourself. And the more you think about others, the more you are going to find yourself.

In other words, you don’t gain yourself by putting yourself first. You gain yourself by putting others first. Can you do that? I am sure you can. But this does not mean neglecting yourself.

How are you going to help if you do not help yourself? Go to school if you can. Be a doctor if you can. And you are going to do a marvelous job of helping others. But right now, what can you do?

You can start by stop littering. Respecting others. Uplifting them. Not putting them down. Fight for social justice. And smile. That way you are going to know yourself. This is I. And this is what I do. Stay positive.
