Nono Nkoane, a jazz singer and composer from Langa, will make her debut performance in the Jazz Native Yards session at KwaSec in NY.138 on Friday at 7pm.

Nkoane is born to a family with a very rich history in music, she was bound to find herself immersed in this world.

Her genius has been revealed in her debut album called True Call, a 10 track Jazz offering packed with hits such as Baleka, Ndalila, My journey, Voice from the past, Meditative state and many more.

Nkoane left Cape Town to seek further training in music. She was given an opportunity by her long time mentor, Dizu Plaatjies, to find her own space and worth in music. Plaatjies’ deep rooted vibes in African Music was a huge influence on her and this played a crucial role in shaping her skill as a vocalist.

Her exposure to jazz music received a major boost while at Tshwane University of Technology, where she studied jazz and contemporary music. Her studies helped transform her into a composer and singer.

She has performed with greats like Jimmy Dludlu, Judith Sephuma, Hugh Masekela, Ernie Smith, Lungiswa Plaatjies, Mirriam Makeba and Jabu Khanyile, and in places such as the Robben Island Festival, Standardbank Joy Of Jazz, Stellenbosch Amphitheatre, Baxter theatre, the State Theatre in Tshwane and also at events in parliament. On Saturday, 7 May, she will also perform at Moholo House in Harare Square, Khayelitsha at 3pm and on Sunday she will be captivating fans at Guga S’thebe in Langa at 3pm. Entrance to all gigs is R60.
