NOMSA Gxotiwe,47, is losing sleep because Ithemba Community Old Age Home faces closure.

Nomsa and her husband Nicholas started the home in Makhaza, Khayelitsha last year. The home looks after 35 senior citizens, 10 of whom live at the centre.

“The fire department wants to close this home because we don’t have fire extinguishers. I was ordered in August to close the home by November. But the families of the madalas and gogos don’t want their loved ones to go elsewhere.”

When City Vision visited the home, the gogos and madalas were sitting in the dining-room watching TV.

Gogo Nomfusi Ndlondlo (78) – who is in a wheelchair – said they do not want to leave Ithemba because it’s been their home for over a year.

“We are really worried that our home may be closed. We want to be here because that’s where we feel safe and happy.”

Safety and security director Richard Bosman said: “The City will meet with roleplayers to discuss a way forward and see how we can assist.”
