LETTER: Our constitutional guarantee is being abused by our own

2016-05-12 06:00

Our people are abusing our hard- earned democracy.

For centuries we were not allowed to protest or stay away from work. Now through our Constitution we are able to exercise those rights.

However, what is happening today is an abuse of such rights.

We often witness mass killings of those people who choose not to strike or stay away.

In Mzansi the people have a right to belong to a union or not.

They have a right to choose to strike or not. Service delivery demonstrations are very violent and destructive.

We protest over poor service delivery and destroy our infrastructure. When we are done protesting we are left with millions and millions of rands of destruction.

It is like we take one step forward as a country and three steps backwards. This puts that particular municipality or province in a backlog and it is us, the people on the ground, who suffer the most.

What is happening in Vuwani is really unacceptable. The court of law has made a ruling, yet people still go on a rampage and vandalise community facilities.

If we do not abide by the courts of the land, then we are not worthy to be called people but lawless barbarians.

The people of South Africa are provoking our government to become dictatorial.

We do not want any repeat of Marikana, hence we need to abide by the rule of law and protect our democracy.
