LETTER: Our politics have a dark side

2016-03-17 06:00

Electioneering is in full progress as the nation prepares for municipal elections. South Africa is sadly enveloped in a culture of political hatred, unprecedented in our democratic history.

Gutter politics and character assassination have replaced decency and civility.

Mortal combat has become the language of our electoral process. Gutter politics is here to stay as long as the political power struggle remains. We live in a world where truth, lies, distortion and politicisation are hard to tell.

Many politicians resort to gutter politics as they do not possess the talent for good governance.

We frequently witness our politicians say bad things and we wonder how they achieved their positions of power.

There has never been a more divided parliament in our democratic history.

Some political figures inspire paranoia, incite divisiveness, encourage radical policies and might disrupt the utopian ideal of democracy.

We look on silently as our politics reaches an unsavoury dimension. We cling to political beliefs that are, in themselves, self-defeating, self-restrictive, morally bankrupt and self-destructive.

We carry our negative emotions with us from generation to generation like some kind of treasure.

It is evident that our political culture has become hyper-charged and violent imagery has been invoked to an alarming degree by certain sources.
