Philippi cellular gang arrested

2017-01-26 06:01

Two suspects aged 23 and 26 were due to appear in Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon, on charges of business robbery and position of illegal firearm.

This comes after they robbed a cellular telephone shop at the Philippi Mall, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police attached to the Nyanga SAPS arrested the suspects minutes after they robbed the shop.

The police officers, who were returning from a tracing operation, had stopped at a red robot when they heard gunshots coming in the direction of the shopping centre.

They saw shoppers scattering in all directions, and four suspects, one of whom was armed, running away from the centre. They managed to arrest the armed robber and another accomplice.

The other two suspects are still at large.

It was later established that the four suspects had robbed several cellular telephones from the shop at the centre, however, a vigilant security guard had stopped the men in their tracks this time, they dropped the cellphones, fleeing from the scene.
