Police nab hijackers, addicts

Nyanga police have launched a manhunt for a suspected hijacker after he escaped an operation sting New Crossroads.

Hi accomplice, a 33 year old male was arrested at around 04:00 on Tuesday in Kroonhof Street after a shootout wth police.

According to police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi, the men were spotted in Philippi, and the police gavechase.

“Police spotted the two driving in Colorado Drive in Browns Farm and when they tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects started to accelerate and attempted to get away but police chased them until they reached New Crossroads, where the suspects started shooting at the police.

Police retaliated but no one was injured,” said Sitshitshi.

One suspect fled on foot and a second suspect was caught and detained.

“This was followed by the arrest of two 20 year old suspects who were caught at around 04:30 in Browns Farm and KTC.

The two allegedly hijacked a delivery van in Sithandathu Avenue in Nyanga. They will be joining their accomplice who was already arrested last Thursday,” said Sitshitshi

All three suspects, aged between 20 and 33 appeared in the Athlone Magistrate Court on charges of hijacking.

Nyanga police also revealed that more than a 100 suspects were arrested in the police precinct over the last week.

“The arrest of 117 suspects is proof that Nyanga police continue to minimise the movement of criminals in the policing precinct. Of the total arrests, 43 were apprehended for drugs, followed by possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen and hijacked vehicles, assault, armed robberies, house robbery, rape attempted murder and housebreaking and theft as well as dealing in liquor,” she explained. Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition, drugs and liquor were confiscated.
