Zibonele FM launched a new logo at a glitzy affair at the Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha on Saturday.

According to management, the aim was to herald the dawn of an inclusive era for the province’s biggest community radio station by audience reach.

However, it was not just a facelift excercise, according to the stations director of corporate services, Mawande Jara.

“We have been planning to revamp the branding of the station for a while but its not just about the logo and the website but we are introducing a few things to improve the station and the relationship with the community.

We have been a community driven station, in particular to the content as changes are influenced by listener suggestion,” said Jara.

He said that the shake-up was the input of resolution made by the station’s board of directors, which included stabilising the stations financial standing, improve its relevance in the community, better administration as well as community integration.

“Looking at the new logo, we wanted to emphasize that Zibonele FM is a station for all areas of Cape Town not just Khayelitsha as the current perception will have you thinking.

That is why there is a symbolism of Table Mountain in the new logo. We are working towards improving our signal in areas such as Gugulethu as part of this drive to involve more communities.

Currently we have a more than 200 000 listeners in Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Langa, Philippi and surrounding areas such as Strand,” he said.

He said that they were also looking at involving other language groups as they were required by Icasa that 10% of their content be in English or Afrikaans.

Some of the changes include an SMS line as well as news hotline to be launched soon. “The community must assist us and our reporters to find out the burning issues and news stories that is happening in our areas,” he told City Vision.

Jara said that integration was not just lips service for them as they have practised exactly what they preach.

“We have involved local businesses to supply services for this new branding; the logo was designed by a second year graphic design student Ntsikelelo Magwaca.

The website was designed by another local Sandiso Toto and even our new tagline was given to us by our presenters,” Jara noted proudly.

He urged the listeners to bare with them as there were more changes coming and thanked them for their loyalty.

Special guest at the launch minister of communication Faith Muthumbi said community stations such as Zibonele FM should be successful in order to inform the marginalised societies.
