LETTER: Read my story and be inspired

2017-04-13 06:00

I am a 25-year old young lady who resides in Langa.

I was raised by my father single-handedly, which is almost unheard of in the community that I come from. My father struggled to make ends meet, but he always wanted the best for me.

Unfortunately, when I was in Grade 3, he lost his job and told me he could no longer afford to take me to school. He said that he wanted me to go to the library every day, until he was able to afford to send me to school again. So, every day when other kids went to school, I went to the library! We did that for months, until I heard about Christel House – a school that provides quality education to impoverished children.

I excelled academically, and went on to study at Stellenbosch University.

After my father passed away shortly after that, I was so overwhelming I dropped out of University. I am currently working as a Public Relations Account Executive, and have plans to finish my degree. I am also running voluntary workshops at the Langa Library to help Grade 12s get work-ready.

I am sharing this story because I believe it has the power to inspire young people just like myself, to not be afraid to reach for their dreams. And most importantly, so that they know that poverty is not an embarrassment, it’s just an inconvenience. A minor setback, that one can overcome with determination, perseverance and hard work.
