Two suspects were caught within minutes of robbing a cellphone shop on Monday (25 January).

According to a report from provincial police, officers from Nyanga Police Station were on their way back from an earlier crime operation when they heard gunshots near a shopping centre in Philippi.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says the officers saw shoppers and four suspects running.

She says the officers arrested two of the four suspects and one of the men had a firearm in his possession.

“It was later established that the four suspects had robbed several cellphones from a shop at the centre. A vigilant security guard stopped the men in their tracks and the suspects dropped the cellphones and fled the scene. The two suspects aged 23 and 26 are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of business robbery and possession of an illegal firearm.”
