‘Roo’ laments lack of substance in implementation

2016-03-31 06:00

Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe says football leaders need to come together to try and improve the country’s showing at international level.

Radebe stressed the need for introspection in light of Bafana’s goalless draw with Cameroon on Monday, which severely dented the national team’s chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon next year.

“We need to come together as football people and see what positive change we can make in order to make things to go well,” said Radebe, who earned 70 caps for Bafana and also skippered Leeds United before retiring in 2005.

“Because we have changed the team, we have changed the manager and we are going to keep doing that. So is there any way we can change again?

Yes, possibly, and we should go look up to the head and say, you know what, what ideas can we come with and who can we get involved to get football to be what it used to be? Football heads need to come together on this one.”

‘Roo’ feels structures - such as SAFA’s technical masterplan dubbed ‘Vision 2022’ - are in place to address the issue but the implementation of ideas has been lacking.

“People want things to change and people talk about great things but implementation has been lacking for a long time.

We need to implement. Let’s get people in places where they can make changes.

“Football has to be run properly not on the field but outside the field. We need proper structures. We have got structure at the moment with the master plan but I think for it to work it’s going to take a little bit of time.

Because if you talk about changes, people still need to adapt to those changes.” . Meanwhile, Mashaba described the question about his job security as “very silly question.”

He blasted at a journalist who posed the question: “I’ve never come to SABC and asked (about) your contract and your job security. I respect that.”

Mashaba continued, questioning the effect that his naysayers were having on his family.

“I’m a human being. I’ve got blood, I’ve got family, I’ve got kids, I’ve got grandkids,” said the coach.
