Local gospel singer, Sange M has a busy two weeks ahead.

She’s currently putting the finishing touches on two big productions, the first of which takes place at the Baxter on Sunday as part of the Zabalaza Theatre Festival, before hosting a worship evening on Friday 18 March.

Sange, from Khayelitsha, has performed across the globe as a singer in the band called Township Connection, as a back-up singer for Lungiswa Plaatjies, as part of the cast of Under African Skies and as a solo artist, but lately she’s been focusing on introducing herself to local audiences.

“They’re not familiar with me since I’ve been doing churches most of the time.”

She says it’s important for her to share her talent with her own community.

“I believe that it’s a good idea to get the people close to you to know you better. “

When she isn’t performing as a gospel artist, Sange shares the stage with jazz musician Frank Paco. Her studies in music education at the University of Cape Town have seen her make many music connections, but she’s also working with the next generation of musicians while she does her practicals at Chris Hani Secondary School.

Sange released her latest album Ubuhle bendalo kaJehova (The Beauty of the nature of God) early last year. Now she’s turning it into a musical.

When she first approached the Baxter, it was with the idea of doing a run-of-the-mill performance, but the show evolved into a production about her personal musical journey.

“Where did it all start? Where am I now? What were my ups and downs?” Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, Ubuhle bendalo kaJehova is full of lessons for both musicians and the audience.

While the piece-written and directed by Sange herself-focuses on gospel music, it also explores the other genres she’s worked in.

“It’s just a beautiful musical.”

The show will be staged at the Baxter’s Flipside Theatre on Sunday 13 March from 16:30 and the Zabalaza Festival organisers will be arranging transport for groups of 35 of more.

Next Friday, 18 March, Sange will present Worship Evening with Sange M at Lookout Hill’s Malibongwe Restaurant in Khayelitsha where she’ll be joined by artists like Sindile Godongwala, M22zeli Lolwana, Nozuko Yekani, Thenjiwe Mdoda, Ncedeka, Thumeka Maqwazima, Psalmists, the GNCC Worship Team, Nkqubela Sangoni and Sthembiso Soboyisi.

The concert starts at 17:00 and runs until 22:00, and Sange will be arranging transport for after the show, provided the audience bring their taxi fare. Tickets for the show at the Baxter cost R30 at Computicket. Contact Sange M on her Facebook page to find out about boolongs and transport.

Tickets for next Friday’s show cost R100 or R120, including Sange M’s new album, which will be available at the door.
