Ten soccer clubs and one netball team from Gugulethu have received a sports kit donation from their ward councillor last Thursday.

The donation was made available by Councillor Bongani Ngcombolo, of Ward 40.

Ngcombolo announced that the clubs, from 14 in the area, were supposed to have received the kit during a soccer tournament about a fortnight ago.

This donation follows the one which were donated by former Ward 40 Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe.

Fikiswa Makisi, an assistant coach at Khulani Netball Club, said they really needed the kit.

“I am very happy. We really needed a sponsor for the kit. Junior and senior teams were sharing one kit,” Makisi said.

The team was established nine years ago.

They play in the Southern Zone League Association which was formed last year.

Khulani Netball Club is currently in position four on the log, which consists of 13 teams.

The league comprises of teams from Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Philippi and Milnerton.

Xolisa Sonti, coach for Real Ideas Football Club, said the donation came at the right time.

“It will help us a lot, because we did not have the money.

It will come in handy and build confidence of the team. I am sure that more children will now join our team.

Our aim is to take children away from the streets and away from anti social issues. We appeal to other businesses to come and help us,” Sonti said.

The team, which plays under the Gugulethu Football Association, is currently preparing for the start of the new season which is due on 10 June.
