‘Tis the season to be jolly, but take care to reflect on the year ahead

What are holidays for? To some it is time to rest. It has been a long year. You’ve been working. You’ve been diligent. You missed a few days from work. Or none. You’ve been good, man.

It is time to enjoy the fruits of thine labour, as some would suggest. Sit back and relax. Enjoy. And next year go back to work rejuvenated. That is what holidays are for, to some. I put an emphasis on “to some”.

That’s not bad. Really, that’s not. This is how we have been conditioned to look at holidays. We have been conditioned to look at them as that time of the year when we touch base. When we visit family and friends.

We have been conditioned to look at them as that time of the year when we spend money. When we go for shopping to buy gifts and food – mostly food and booze. No holiday is complete without booze.

And let me make it clear. By holiday I mean festive season – end of the year. You feel guilty if you don’t celebrate. Like it is wrong. It is not right. Or, people will think you are poor. You don’t have money. That you must buy and buy, to become part of the crowd. Even when the rand is falling because of Zuma. We must buy. Oh well, we sure have to, don’t we? Because if you don’t, it’s like, why not?

This is my gripe. The festive seasons are cool. They are what they mean to you. But they are also an opportunity to reflect. If you know what I mean. They are moments of reflection.

What reflection, you may ask? I will be specific. If you want to know yourself, this is the moment. If you want to know how to make it in life, this is an opportunity. Don’t let it slip through your fingers.

Others do because they watch what others do and follow suit. They don’t think for themselves. They don’t think about renewing themselves. They don’t even know what that means. Instead they ask, “What is there to renew?” Good on you if you don’t know yourself. You have to know yourself to want to renew yourself. Without that you won’t. You will remain the same. This reminds me of two friends who have not seen each other for decades and when they do say, “I’m still the same!” “I’m still the same!” Meaning mentally they have not changed. They still think the same way.

You have to grow to move forward. And what can help you to do that? It is to take a step back and reflect. And the good moment for that are holidays. I hope this festive season you do that. I hope you reflect on yourself. Stay positive.
