LETTER: Township living is hell on earth

2017-03-23 06:02

After 11 years I had bought my house in the location. I was following in the footsteps of the likes of Sobukwe, Biko and many other people that could afford running away from the townships but refused assimilation into false Black middle class life. I had always believed that we do not need to run away from the location because of poor service delivery, crime and other social ills.

We need to take the whole location out of the township and turn it into suburbs through our active participation in being positive role models and responsible citizens.

I have suffered more harm from the very same community I seek to uplift. I have had my cars stolen three times. I have had my house broken into twice, one armed robbery and the other burgled while I was asleep. My car had been broken into once and a drunken driver smashed into my car. I have also been a victim of police inefficiency since none of the seven has been resolved.

The last nail in the coffin has been the victimization I have suffered at the hands of the local police from wrongful arrest and the beating by policeman on duty in February 2017.

I am now facing three charges of assault from the same police that beat me and could not solve the seven cases I brought to their attention.

Must I continue living in the township? Does the township tolerate people like me and who want to make a change in society?
