Today, as Khayelitsha suffers a serious leadership vacuum, we need to appreciate the contributions made by giants like Michael and Nomsa Mapongwana, Julius Ntsholo, Zola Ntsoni, Solomon Tshuku, Mzukisi Meyana, Vumile Siximba, Richard Qeqe Makeleni, Skola Jiba, Xolani Mbundu Khaya Yapi and Raymond Mrawu.

The above had a great sense to be humble servants for the people. A value that leadership is not a virtue, but an opportunity given by the people to learn!

The highest forms of human consciousness is the only guarantee to safeguard any revolutionary process.

In the aftermath of the local government elections, the community of Khayelitsha will have to re-define what its vision for a Khayelitsha of the future is.

A new caliber of leader will have to be sold on the idea that it will not be enough to bank on how long they have been in the area or what they have done.

If the young people do not know the history of this community, it is because there are no dedicated teachers, or excellent centers of learning. Many of our youths do not know where the area comes from. They don’t know why it was put more than thirty kilometers outside the Cape Town CBD.

The young ones see their parents and leaders buy into the material worshiping culture, and follow in their footsteps.

As a result, it will not be enough for anyone to wait for an invitation to a community celebration or rememberance of the death of Sinoxolo Mafevuka or the recent attacks on UCT volunteers doing work in te township.

When genuine agents of social growth take to battle, it is neither for self-glory nor is it an investment to receive rewards and awards.

Their willingness to go to battle or die is a self-sacrifice to the service of the people, an act of selflessness.

The individual’s ego has to be sacrificed, killed to keep the desire for social growth burning bright.

What depresses the community of Khayelitsha is what some who call themselves leaders are doing with being an organized community. The selfless sacrifice of leaders is born of a conviction that fighting for social growth is a thankless job.

A true leader will not wait to be invited or be included as a keynote speaker at programnes. A leader should not hesitate to get into the busses and trains with the people. If they have a car, they will not hesitate to bring along fellow community members who cannot afford the trip.

The leader has no special preferences and pre-occupation with large tables heaving and huffing with food. They are not impressed by the free flow of booze that wastes resources.

They are willing to eat from brown paper bags as long as their desire for justice and equality is fulfilled. They must see it with their eyes. The leader knows and accepts that they are what they are because of the people. If you are with the people, every moment of everyday, the people will be with you in body and spirit every day. There should be no fences between the elites and the people; then people will give everything to protect their leader. The vision and dream of the leader we all want will define the character of the society through intimate interaction with people on the ground.

The people are sulking because they know what they demand from their leader, and it is what they deserve. Their forefathers and great grandmothers did not sacrifice to create “This most un-serviced and impoverished township in Cape Town, the Western Cape and the Country” It is now up to those who see themselves as genuine people’s leaders to rise to the occasion.
