Two cousins from Khayelitsha left their jobs to take over a family upholstery business from their grandfather.

Innocent Nojika and Siphosethu Mchaku, both 22 years old, left their jobs to do upholstery at Khayelitsha Training Centre.

Their company operates under the name Sizisa Ukhanyo.

Innocent said he is better off than when he was employed.

His cousin Siphosethu concurred.

Siphosethu said: “This is more profitable than working for somebody else. We get money, have no transport fees and don’t have to pay rent. We have big plans to grow.”

Innocent told City Vision that his 64-year-old grandfather opened the upholstery workshop in 1986. As age caught up with him, the two cousins took over the business and are doing a good job.

Innocent specialises in sewing various kinds of material, which Siphosethu uses for upholstery.

The place is busy. They do both repairs and make new products.

“We didn’t have much formal upholstery training – we learnt this from our madala,” added Innocent.

Both cousins said they live alone and are single but they take care of their families in the Eastern Cape.
