Quick thinking by detectives hindered what could have been an easy catch for thieves on Friday in Harare.

Two men went to Harare police reporting that a Hyundai truck with a trailer loaded with home appliances was robbed from them.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexane said the two claimed that an unknown vehicle collided with the truck and forced them to stop.

“When they confronted the driver of the other car, the driver allegedly pointed them with a firearm. The two complainants said they fled the scene on foot abandoning the truck,” she said.

A carjacking case was opened and the case was transferred to Macassar police for further investigation.

Preliminary investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the carjacking never occurred and the two men lied under oath

The investigation led police to addresses in Paarl and Milnerton where the stolen property was recovered and six suspects aged between 26 and 35 year old were arrested. The total value of recovered home appliances is estimated at R200 000.

The suspects facing counts of perjury, defeating the end of justice. Station Comman Lt Colonel Richard Koopman commended the members for the outstanding investigation that led to the arrests.
