The Unmute Dance Company (UDACO), which started out six years ago in Khayelitsha, was recently made a partner of Artscape.

This announcement was made by Marlene le Roux the CEO of Artscape. Unmute will be representing people with disabilities in the dance.

The Unmute Dance Company (UDACO) works in schools and communities where they do outreach performances and workshops that promotes arts and ability integration. The dance company was started in 2013 after the after the Youngblood Arts and Culture Development had funded Unmute’s work. It was later also supported by the National Arts Council, Dance Forum South Africa and British Council.

Artistic director Andile Vellem said that choreography is based on his experience as a dancer who is deaf. He has been dancing professionally for more than 13 years.

“Unmute is my way of finding my voice as a choreographer, using sign language as the source of the movement vocabulary. With this creation I brought together artists from different backgrounds to find and explore what they would like to unmute which include their feelings, perceptions, social norms and expectations. And also endeavouring to deconstruct what society perceives as dance,” he said.
