This is not a complaint but a lifetime disaster. Three weeks ago me and my partner went to the Khayelitsha Home Affairs to register our same-sex marriage.

I was disturbed by the incompetency that greatly inconvenienced us a couple.

The lack of information in that branch about this kind of marriage is alarming.

This needs to be rectified in every way possible. After registering in the marriage book, it took us several e-mails and calls to a higher office for us to be issued our marital certificate-we were told it was not valid.

At one stage I was called to an 8am meeting with a certain official who only pitched up an hour late. In my kind of work I am paid on hourly basis, this meant I lost income.

When I finally had a chance to speak to the official I asked her to explain on what grounds was marriage null and void.

I had told her that even though we were married on November 5, still by November 19 our certificate was not issued. I spent an hour with the official explaining my grievance. I also asked her if the office had received any training on conducting same sex marriages.
