‘Zi right iigirls’? is good, but spare a thought for the boys

2015-12-17 06:00

“Zi right iiboys, too”? This has been utmost on my mind since the advent of #Zi right iigirls on social networks.

It seems no one wants to know how the boys are doing; gender inequality notwithstanding.

Many single mothers are parents of boys and they raise them the only way they know best.

The only father figures the boys have access to are uncles, grandfathers and sometimes even stepfathers.

However, some boys don’t get along with their stepfathers. Our boys don’t always have positive role models.

Most of them learn from their peers who also have no father figures or positive role models. Some role models give our boys a false impression of what being rich is like; drinking expensive whiskey, driving flashy cars and eating sushi from the torsos of half-naked women.

The Government and the private sector have campaigns like Take a Girl Child to Work and 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

I have never heard of such campaigns for boys. Our boys are also victims of abuse and they too need to be guided in their career paths. And lastly I believe that our boys feel left out because a boy child is expected to be strong and not show his emotions. Our boys need to be respected and protected just as much as girls. From now onwards when we ask whether #ziright iigirls, we should also remember to ask #ziright iiboys.
