THE body of an unidentified black male was found in Canelands on Saturday morning.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Prem Balram said that their operations centre in Verulam received a call from a member of the public on Saturday morning saying a body had been seen in a bush in Canelands.

Balram said that officers proceeded to the area near the Canelands Library and met a group of males who were searching for a relative who went missing a few days ago.

“The relatives then came across a body in the bush after being informed by a passerby of a stench in the vicinity. The group led Reaction officers to the scene where a male was found lying face up with a stick near him. He was dressed in a white jersey and a black shorts.”

The group of men could not confirm if the deceased was their missing relative as the body had began decomposing and could not be easily identified, Balram said.

“The group were searching the area as the missing relative lived in the same area and they were informed that the deceased and his friends were attacked by an angry mob from Canelands. The deceased and his friends were severely beaten,” said Balram.

According to the group, the friends have not been located and the reason for the mob attack is unclear at this stage.

Balram said that a missing persons report was filed by the family at the local police. Police are investigating a case of murder.
