VERULAM Astro Soccer held their first awards ceremony last week in Dawncrest where local side, Dawncrest Sporting FC received their league title.

Dawncrest Sporting also had the top scorer, Paven Naidoo, coming from their side while as a team they conceded the least goals in the league.

Ecstatic club captain, Kamen (Geez) Pillay said the win and accolades the club had achieved bode well for soccer in the community and the team were proud to bring home silverware.

“It was a very tight season and the teams in the league showed a lot of character. It wasn’t an easy league to win. We had to work hard but it has been a long time coming,” said Pillay.

Going into the next season, Dawncrest Sporting are hoping to carry their form forward and improve on their performances while integrating younger players into the squad.

“There will be a lot of teams trying to knock us off our perch so we will have to fight hard and work harder to stay at the top,” said Pillay.

Pillay said the team hoped the win will encourage more youth to get involved in soccer.

The team walked away with new kits, medals, a floating trophy and a cash prize while Naidoo was awarded with a trophy, full tracksuit and training boots.

Owner of Verulam Astro Soccer, Zubair Ishmail congratulated all the teams for their performances over the season and the community for their support.

Ishmail described the season as tough and a nail-biter after Dawncrest Sporting won the last game by 9 goals, to win the title on goal difference.

“We had a very competitive season with Dawncrest, Kallies and SAPS and our aim now is to get the younger generation in the sport. We want the community and schools to get involved because we need sport in the lives of our children,” said Ishmail.

The next season will begin in January with the hope of increasing the league size to 15 teams.

A knock-out tournament is also planned for 5-6 December 2015 with prize money of R6000.
