Public protector is not the enemy

2015-05-21 06:00

IF the people of our country want to know why we are rapidly regressing politically and serially underperforming economically, we should focus on how Mathole Motshekga, chair of the Justice Portfolio Committee, dominates discussion in the portfolio committee and lets loose his venom on the Public Protector. The other members of the ANC take their cue from him. The sheer lack of respect for the office of the Public Protector is undermining our democracy at its very heart.

What is the reason for this venomous hostility? She reported that President Zuma and his family benefitted from the upgrades at Nkandla. Everyone in South Africa, bar the sycophants in the ANC, readily acknowledge this.

After all, how can security upgrades cost R240 million or more?

Parliament should have public representatives who concentrate on advancing the interests of the citizens.

Their primary responsibility is to hold the executive accountable. ANC MPs, at present, often behave as a hunting pack ready to tear a political quarry on a signal. The ANC MPs are betraying the voters of South Africa and destroying the great legacy of Nelson Mandela.

ANC MPs cannot hide their hatred towards Thuli Madonsela because of self-interest, In a similar way, out of self-interest, these MPs fawn over Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Mathole Motshekga is a devotee of party politics. He sacrifices neutrality, as the chair, to attack those who find fault with the president. What a disgusting betrayal of democratic values and constitutional regard.

The Public Protector does not deserve this type of naked disrespect from people who call themselves public representatives.

No amount of intimidation or hatred will deter the public protector from doing her work and exposing any abuse of power regardless of where it occurs. Nothing the ANC MPs, showing themselves as the president’s lackeys, can do to change the findings and recommendations on massive over expenditure at Nkandla, Denigrating her will not work. President Zuma will have to pay back a reasonable portion for the benefit they received. Even Dramat’s exit will not alter that.

COPE expresses its unqualified support for the Public Protector. She exemplifies what is good and true in our society. Making a martyr will backfire on Mathole Motshekga and the ANC. We assure Madonzela that millions of good men and women in South Africa are fully behind her, and appreciate what she is doing to keep abuse of power in check.
