WHAT does a podiatrist do?

Podiatrists can be thought of as a type of foot doctor.

They can give you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear. They can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems, including:

• toenail problems, such as thickened, fungal or ingrown toenails

• corns and calluses

• verrucas

• athlete’s foot

• smelly feet

• dry and cracked heels

• flat feet

• bunions

Serisha Neerchand is a podiatrist who qualified in 2007 from the University of Johannesburg.

She has been practising for the past 10 years in Johannesburg and is now expanding her practice to KwaZulu-Natal.

The reason for the move to the coast is a lack of podiatrists on the North Coast and an opportunity to serve a larger community.

Special interests include diabetic patients, children and biomechanics.

Neerchand has a state of the art computerised gait analysis system which identifies and corrects gait problems thus ensuring proper offloading in diabetic patients and relief from painful heels and spurs.

Why should you see a podiatrist?

A podiatrist is an Allied Healthcare professional registered with the health professions council of South Africa.

Podiatrist are trained to diagnose, prevent, treat and rehabilitate by medical and surgical means conditions of the foot and lower limbs.

Medical aids do pay for podiatry services as long as you have savings available.

Pensioner discounts are available.
