CATARACT is the leading cause of reversible blindness.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness.

World Sight Awareness Month is meant to bring global attention to blindness and visual impairment.

285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness. 90% of these people live in low income communities and countries, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable.

Restoration of sight is one of the most cost effective interventions in health care.

An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired. 65% of all visually impaired individuals are more than 50 years old.

Therefore visual impairment affects those sectors of our society that are the most vulnerable, i.e. the elderly, robbing them of their independence and dignity.

It is in keeping with this ethos that Tongaat Eye Centre is dedicated to creating awareness on a yearly basis by getting involved with such outreach programmes.

Dr Naidoo would like to thank KZN Day Clinic and staff for their hospitality and amazing patient care during the pro bono cataract surgeries for two deserving individuals last month.
