THE Checkout Verulam Falcons participated in the Big Hill half marathon near Ballito over the festive season.

The Big Hill 21km and 10km attracted an enthusiastic band of participants who descended to a smallholding outside Ballito. The freshness of the farming surrounds greeted runners as they set off from the Sugar Rush to take on the Big Hill.

Participants, who were fully aware of the name of the race, knew that it would not be easy going. The Big Hill proved to be a monster snaking up 8km of treacherous uphill towards Esenembe.

The return offered some respite, but runners had invested too much in the first half to really take advantage of the steep descent.

The Checkout Verulam Falcons were led by Bala Govender who finished in under two hours.

Govender was followed home by Sophie Ismail who is setting her sights on a brighter 2016 running season.

Eddie Singh and Celiwe Ndaba walked the undulating route in just over three hours. Ebrahim Asmal was the first 10km Falcons walker home.

The full Falcons results were:

In the 21km runners results: Bala Govender 1:57, Sophie Ismail 2:08, Cindeera Padavattan 2:10, Yunus Doba 2:102, Val Naidu 2:1026, Farouk Kadwa 2:20, Vitasha Ramnarayan 2:20, Bheki Ncube 2:22, Marlene Pillay 2:22, Sarika Seur 2:29, Ashwin Bedesi 2:29, Dawood Norath 2:45, Veeran Ramnarayan 3:20.
