Bus company pays tribute to slain driver

IN the two weeks since his tragic murder, 44-year-old bus driver, Zakhe Gumede has left a gaping hole in the lives of his family, friends and work colleagues.

Gumede was shot at close range and killed by an unknown man on Friday morning, 1 April while he was transporting passengers en route to Umhlanga on his Tongaat Circle bus.

The bus then crashed down a small embankment, leaving a number of passengers injured.

Witnesses of the incident claim to have overheard the shooter demanding money from Gumede before he was shot twice in the upper arm and jaw.

Gumede was employed as a bus driver at the Tongaat Circle Bus Company (TCBC) for more than 10 years and according to friends, earned his reputation as a compassionate and gentle person.

Vinesh Rugbeer, TCBC general manager and Gumede’s former employer, said he was a very good man who was well liked by everyone he came into contact with.

“Zakhe was a very responsible driver who was always kind and hard-working.

“He was also very respectful of others and was definitely not the violent type in any way,” said Rugbeer, who said he and others at the company are in shock at the sudden and tragic death of their friend and colleague.

Gumede’s murder is still under investigation with Tongaat police, who currently have no new leads as to the identity or whereabouts of his killer.

The 44-year-old bus driver was also a beloved husband and father and the primary breadwinner for his family; leaving behind his wife and two children.

“Zakhe’s wife and children are extremely traumatised at his loss, and he is sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him,” said Rugbeer.
