TWO of four men, wanted for theft of motor vehicles, were arrested in Oaklands, Verulam following a shooting between members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) and the suspects on Wednesday, October 4.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa Prem Balram said in a media statement his control room received a call from a member of the public reporting the theft of motor vehicle in progress in Oaklands.

“The caller explained that four occupants of a VW Golf were in process of stealing a Mistubishi Colt bakkie which was parked on the roadside when they were disturbed. The officers were dispatched to Westbrook Drive in Oaklands.

“As officers were responding to the call they noticed the VW Golf travelling at high speed down Oaklands Drive. In an attempt to evade arrest the suspects turned into Oaklands Village,a housing complex with a single entrance and exit point.”

There was an exchange of fire between the suspects and Rusa officers. The suspects alighted from their getaway vehicle and fired shots at the officers.

“Rusa officers blocked off the driveway as they entered.

“One opened fire on officers, who retaliated and shot the suspects’ vehicle. Two suspects were arrested [and the other two] managed to evade arrest by fleeing along a stream at the rear of the complex.”

Officers recovered vehicle computer boxes belonging to a Toyota, car keys and tools used in the theft of motor vehicles.

According to Balram the two suspects are Verulam residents and have been previously convicted for theft of motor vehicle. Both suspects were handed over to authorities.

SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said: “The suspects were charged with attempted theft of motor vehicle. They are being detained at the Verulam Police Station until they appear in court.” - Supplied
