Community warned against bogus workers

2017-08-17 06:05

THE SAPS is warning the Durban community and surrounding areas to be aware of the resurgence of a modus operandi used by criminals to rob homes and occupants.

In a statement sent to Coastal Weekly, SAPS said homeowners have been robbed of their household items and valuables by criminals who pretend to be municipal or Telkom employees.

A group of four or five males wearing municipal or Telkom uniforms and reflector jackets and mostly travel in a Hyundai H100 pickup truck or bakkie, approach homes, pretending to be there to read meters or for other maintenance purposes.

As soon as the house occupants open the gate for them, they hold them up at gunpoint and rob
them.

The community must remember that municipal employees do not come in groups when reading
meters and are usually on foot.

No Telkom employee will come into your house if you have not reported a fault to their customer services.

Communities must always be alert and should not allow strangers onto their property or into their home

Homeowners must teach the family and domestic worker to always be cautious.

If one is suspicious of people at your property, you should request them to produce their identification card and verify it with the relevant authorities.
