WEEKLY REPORTER

A TONGAAT policeman died and his wife sustained serious injuries after he allegedly shot her three times before shooting himself at Sundial Place on Sunday, September 24.

Warrant Officer Shaun Zangwa (48), who was stationed at the Tongaat SAPS, is a resident of Hambanathi Township.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa Prem Balram said in a statement, his control centre received a call from a resident in the area reporting multiple shots being fired at the Mission which is situated next to a church.
“Reaction officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival it was established that the couple [were arguing] and the deceased [allegedly] drew his 9mm service pistol and fired three shots at his wife. One bullet struck her in the arm. He then proceeded to an open ground behind the Mission and shot himself once in the head.
“Medics were called out to the scene and upon arrival found that the policeman had been fatally injured and was declared deceased.”

The injured woman was rushed to Tongaat clinic before she was transferred to another hospital later.

According to the sources close to the family, the injured woman is recovering in hospital.

SAPS Tongaat spokesperson Captain Patrick Ngwane said: “The body of the deceased was taken to a government mortuary for postmortem to be done. Police opened a case of attempted murder and an inquest docket.”
